Nothing says spring to us, than the arrival of chicks. During the cold winter months we study the various chickens we can order and weigh the various characteristics of each including, egg color, likely to produce eggs, coloration of hens, demeanor and size. After much discussion, we ordered mostly arauconas for their colorful eggs and lively personalities. We also ordered some lovely silver and polish crested hens. They have a sort of hat on them that makes feathers grow down over their heads. This makes them quite tame as they can't see very well, and unfortunately easy prey. They are a smaller bird and more fragile, but we ordered a few in hopes that they will survive.

We carefully unload them and...

offer them a drink of water before placing them under the heat lamp. This will be there home for 6-8 weeks before they are given full range of the hen house and outside.

Hawk, the oldest member of our small flock is quite interested in what is causing all of the ruckus in the hen house.
