Biztowne

Welcome to Biztowne! The town that takes fifth graders on a trip to experience true commerce.

Each student interviewed for jobs including CEO, CFO, Bank Teller, Medical Assistants, Shop Managers, Construction Workers and Radio Station hosts. There were about 15 businesses in all and each business accepted about 8 positions. After each student was granted a job, they received a pay check and checkbook. They were required to do their specific job, cash their checks and deposit some money into savings. During breaks they could purchase food, drink and merchandise created by the shops. The business were quite accurate the jobs demanding. They included a construction company, a food service company, a newspaper, a TV station, a few retailers, a wellness center, a bank and even a City Hall. I worked with the kids in the Planet Earth Shop and my Mom worked with the kids in the Wellness Center. The set up was quite impressive as real businesses have donated office equipment and materials for much of this program.

The Wellness Center was ready to measure your weight, sell stress balls check eye sight and raffled off a bike helmet.

The radio station DJs played tunes all day and took requests.

The Planet Earth shop employees made recycled goods and sold them.

Businesses even had their electric meters read by the utility company. They were later billed for their use.

Here our shop's square footage is being measured to assess the taxes.

Danek was the TV host of KBiz TV. Here he is interviewing the Mayor of Biztowne. He actually ran against her in the election but lost.

The Planet Earth employees. They did a fine job, however we never completely paid off our bank loan.

The construction company built a bench that was later donated to the school.

The Wellness Center paid off their bank loan and won the award for "Best Business".
This was a great day to be with the kids. I think many of them got a different view in regard to work, loans, savings and what makes a business prosper. It was a lot of fun.
